Professional Tax Service

P-Tax, or Professional Tax, is a state-level tax in India imposed on income earned through professions, trades, callings, and employment. Despite its name, it is not just for "professionals" like doctors or lawyers but applies to almost anyone earning an income.

 


Salaried Employees: It is deducted directly from your salary by your employer.

Self-Employed: Professionals (e.g., freelancers, doctors, CAs) and business owners must pay it directly to the state government themselves.

It is levied by State Governments, not the Central Government. Therefore, the rules and rates vary from state to state (e.g., Maharashtra and Karnataka charge it, while states like Delhi and Haryana do not).

The amount is usually based on your income slabs. However, the maximum amount a state can charge is capped at ₹2,500 per year.

Tax Benefit: The Professional Tax you pay is allowed as a deduction from your taxable income under the Income Tax Act (Old Regime).
